Tidal power

Essay topics

The article and lecture both explains the alternative energy from which can be drawn from the tides. The author of the reading says that this potential energy can be exploited by building barrage or dams across a river or at the mouth of the bay. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubts claiming that in the process of drawing energy from tides there are quite a few drawbacks associated with it.

First of all, the author points out that this is the same technology that is used in hydroelectric power plants where the gates and turbines are built are regular intervals along the dam which are opened when there is a level in rise of tide. This point is challenged by the lecture, as the professor induces the drawbacks of it. She says though this is an alternate energy source, only a fraction of the total energy can be procured. But still she claims that this fraction of energy drawn can be continued at the regional level

Secondly, the author contends that this tidal power is renewable, non-polluting and does no contribution to the greenhouse gas effect. The lecture on the other hand posits some of the environmental impacts associated with it. She rebuts that aquatic life in seas and estuaries can be possibly affected as the quality of water changes when assorted. She elaborates this by mentioning that fishes that migrate between sea water and river water would be hampered consequently do to the deposits of mud and sediments it would be a devastating conditions for the birds and the associated vegetation for their inhabitation.

Finally the author of the passage concludes that this technology to exploit the potential energy can provide a useful energy supplement whereas the professor argues that this alternative source can only impact a paucity area and also puts forth the idea that the installation cost would be much expensive for such small fraction of energy drawn
