TOEFL Official Guide - Practice Test 2 - Integrated Writing - Professors on TV
The discussion is whether professors should be giving talks on wide media like television or they should stick to classrooms, library research, and conferences.
Firstly, the passage claims that the professor gets a wider audience to listen to his/her research work. When a professor gets a platform as big as a television, where the whole world can see the professors' work, he/she also gains the reputation among his/her colleagues at the university. To which the lecture makes an opposite argument by stating the fact that a medium like TV is not actually looking for something as serious as education. Viewers of television would prefer watching something entertaining rather than some meticulous research work. The focus of TV programs is to telecast a movie version of some educational work so that it can be entitled to an educational program.
Secondly, the passage states the professor will be able to reach to wider audiences as compared to a guest lecture or attending a conference. In contrast to this, the lecturer says being on television will bring down the reputation of the professor among his/her colleagues. They will think of him/her as some entertainer and not as a serious scholar whose main focus is to share the knowledge and educate the students of the university. Moreover, the lecturer says the professor can use the time wasted in traveling, preparing for the talk on TV and looking good on the show on talking to the students, his/her own research and university business, which will be more fruitful to his time.
In addition to this, the passage mentions a wider audience will lead to an increased value of that university which will eventually lead to more scholar students willing to apply at that university. The university may get more donation for the research work, to which the lecturer says the appearance on TV might lead to a reduction in funding.
In conclusion, TV appearance of a professor may lead to waste of time, money and the reputation of the professor and the university, both, can be at stake.
