TOEFL Official Guide - Practice Test 2 - Integrated Writing - Professors on TV

The reading passage and lecture have conflicting opinions about whether it is a good idea that the professors appear on TV. The article strongly postulates that it is beneficial for themselves and their universities as well as the public. On the other hand, the listening adamantly delineates that there is no benefit from it because of three compelling reasons.

First and foremost, the lecturer points out that appearing on tv may affect adversely to the professors' professional careers because they have become entertainers, not educators. More and more appearing as celebrities on TV, they are isolating from important meeting and conferences. As a result, no one wants to invite them to crucial events of great professors. Nonetheless, the author offsets these points by declaring that appearance on TV will give the professors fame among their fellows. Thousands of people will know them from tv program than their published books.

On top of this, the lecturer further asserts that it takes a lot of time prepare for it because the professors have to think about what they will present as well as rehearse it. Consequently, there is not enough time to do their real jobs such as talking with students and attending vital seminars. It will also negatively influence on university's reputation of academic success because its professors pay more attention to their appearance of TV. These claims refute the writer's implications about it will enhance the university's fame among the public due to their professor. To be more specific, the public will think that this university has educated professor, so it will definitely increase the donator of funds in university.

Lastly, the speaker in the lecture suggests that people usually want to know briefly about scientific things the professors discuss, thus there is no difference between the news reporter's given information and those of real professors. This mainly due to the fact that no one desires to listen to their lectures after dinner. Nevertheless, the article counters these indications by insisting that the public will appreciate their knowledge because they think that the professor has an in-depth understanding of their areas.
