TOEFL Official Guide - Practice Test 2 - Integrated Writing

The reading says professors' appearing TV has positive effects on professors, universities, and general publics. However, the professor claims in the lecture that it's not beneficial for professors to appear on TV programs.

First of all, the passage states that by appearing on television professors can be recognized and regarded as authorities in their academic field by a wider audience than they have on campus. The professor refutes this point by stating that when professors appear on TV, they are regarded as an entertainer, rather than those who are engaged in education. He also claims that they are less likely to be invited to conference and get money for their laboratory and research.

Second, the reading says that universities professors belong to can also benefit from their appearing on TV. It says universities can get positive publicity and people will think more highly of them, and thus this leads to more donations and applications from competent students. On the contrary, the professor says appearing on TV has negative impact on universities and students because they waste their time by appearing TV and preparing for that. He says they should spend such time on their research, meeting their students, and university businesses.

Third, the passage states that by appearing on TV professors can provide general public with the precious chances to contact with university professors and to get a taste of real expertise and insight from them. However, the professor's idea contradicts to this. He says general public don't expect serious matters to TV programs, and what public programs want is not a professional materials but an academic title.
