The passage here talks about the the tree, Torreya taxifolia which was very common in the mid 19th century is steadily declining which is causing concern.
The article mentions about three options that can be implied in order to conserve the population of these tree. The professor in her lecture refutes about the idea explains their drawbacks.
The first option is by replanting the Torreya trees in same location in which the survived for many years, that is in the northern Florida which is micro climate. This wet land is suitable for reestablishing the trees. But the professor disagrees and explains that due to global warming and strong surrounding climates these micro climate is changing, wet land is drying. So, This might not be a good option.
The second option state in the passage is quite different from the first, by moving these trees to completely new location that is far away from Florida where it is much colder. The lecturer illustrates a similar situation which caused a bigger problem, the black locust tree which was in the verge of extending was planted in a new ecology, this tree grew rapidly and killed other plants living the area. Likewise planting tree in a new place can have unprecedented consequence.
The last choice is by growing in a conserved and close system, in a research facility. So, that it can by monitored and nourished timely to conserve. The professor claims that by doing so it would make tree weak and vulnerable to diseases poor gene. And also creating large ecological system like forest in a viable option.
