topic: shortening the employees workweek to 4 days instead of five days
The reading and the lecture are both about the employee’s workweed and payment. Whereas the reading supports the shortening of employees week work to four days instead of five days and pay the employees 80% of their original salaries. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
Firstly, the reading stats that the shortened workweek would increase the company’s profits because employees would be more comfortable and rested, therefore fewer errors in their work would be made. However, the lecturer disputes this points. He states that the shortening of workweek would affect the economy of the companies negatively because the companies would have to pay the same amount of money for the employees’ health insurance even if they work four days instead of five. He also claims that training other employees to replace the original employees on the fifth day would cost the companies more money.
Secondly, the reading suggests that by shortening the workweek employees would have more free time to improve the quality of their lives. The lecturer refutes this point. He states that some companies would ask their employees to do the five days’ work in four days and maybe make them work overtime to get the work done. Moreover they companies would raise their expectations on the employees work since they have more time to rest. Furthermore, that would make the employee more tired because of overworking.
Thirdly, and finally, the reading says that the shortening of week work would work in the favor of individuals who choose to work four days instead of five with an 80% salary of their original salary. Nevertheless, the lecturer says that it has a negative effect on the employee himself. He mentions that employees who choose this option would have problems advancing in their careers and they might lose their jobs since they risk decreasing their job’s stability in comparison with full time employees. In addition, they will not be able to get promotions like a five days employee since the companies would prefer a five days worker who provides continuous coverage to the companies.
