TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The passage states that woking for four days instead of five will be beneficial to employees as well as the employer. However, the lecture presents a contrary opinion to the passage.

Firstly, the lecture states that companies would be spending more by hiring more number of employees to work four days a week. This is because the company would need to provide health insurance, office space and computer to each of its staff. Additionally, the cost of hiring would be greater as more employees need to be employed. On the other hand, reading states that the employee working for only four days will be paid lesser salary which would compensate for the extra number of employees. It does not take into account the additional costs like stationary, office space and health benefits of employees.

Secondly, the lecture points out the fallacy in reasoning that four work day scheme would generate more employment opportunities. The company may expect its empoyees to work overtime. It may also expect its emplyees to complete the job of five days in four days. Whereas, reading assumes that new jobs will be created and there will be one new employee for every four current employees.

Thirdly, this policy will effect the employees adversly. employees would risk losing their jobs during unfavourable economic conditions as company would prefer a person who works for five days. Also, they will not be considered for promotion as management jobs are better handled by people working throughout the week. Thus their career would not advance as expected. Reading, by contrast, stated that the extra time on weekends would enhance the quality of life for the employee as he can persue his hobbies and spend more time with family.
