TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The lecture explained why offering employees the option of working 4 days a week would affect companies' profits , economic conditions and the employees life in a negative way for the following reasons.

First of all, A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer the employees a shortened work week, would force the company to hire more workers who require training , health benefits and more office space or more computers, this will increase the company expenses and decrease its profit. This directly refutes the reading passage which states that hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work is accomplished will not result in additional cost.

Secondly, In order to avoid spending more money on new employees, the companies might raise their expectation level from the employees, For example, the company might ask the employees to work over time, which may cause more work errors. This refutes the reading passage because employees would feel less rested and less alert which may cause more costly errors.

Thirdly, However, it was mentioned in the reading passage that more free time would increase the employees quality of life.Working only four days a week may have some risks on the employees, For example, It might lower their job stability as well as it might decrease their chances to get an advanced positions, as the company might prefer a full time employee so that the work flow may remain consistent specially in management positions where consistent supervision is needed.

All is all, A mandatory policy may decrease the company profits by increasing the expenses, cause more costly error and affect the employee's work life negatively.
