TPO-03 - Integrated Writing Task Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rem

The reading and the lecture are both about Rembrandt and whether the portrait of the woman was actually painted by him or not. The author asserts that there are some clues that this painting doesn’t represent the Rembrandt’s style. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She supposes this painting is definitely the work of Rembrandt.

First of all, the author points on the mistakes in light’s representation of a natural illumination. Rembrandt was a master of illumination and he wasn’t able to make such inappropriate mistakes. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that, nowadays, the colour of the painting is not the original one. The painting was recoloured for making it more valuable and expensive, by choosing a different colour painter tended to make the woman’s portrait more aristocratic. Furthermore, she asserts that the original painting has good sense of illumination, dark and bright areas on the fur collar and woman’s face fitted together naturally and perfectly.

Secondly, the author contends Rembrandt never used a panel made of several pieces as a back of his paintings. The article notes, that the painting known to be made by Rembrandt has a panel glued together in this way. The lecturer rebuts this argument, and she believes that these glued pieces weren't made by the famous artist. These changes had aimed to enlarge the painting. Also, lecturer says that the main part of the painting’s back was made from the same tree, that was used in other Rembrandt’s works.
