TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The passage explains three major theories on the purpose of building Chaco structures, great houses with hundreds of rooms made up of stone. According to the lecture, the theories explained in the passage are not convincing.

First of all, the passage explains the first theory which is based on the fact that the Chaco structures were solely used for residential purposes. However, the lecturer contends that the inside of the houses cast doubt on this theory. The professor states that the houses had only few fireplaces and if the houses were used solely for the residential purpose, they had to have more fireplaces facilitating daily cooking by each family. Also, the houses did not have enough rooms as well.

The second theory about Chaco structures maintains that the large size of Chaco structures makes them suitable for grain-maize storage which is stored to supply people’s food for a long period of time. The lecturer, On the other hand, believes that the houses were not used for the purpose of storing food supplies such as grain-maize since there wشس no trace of maize or maize containers in them.

The third theory contends that the major usage of the houses was for holding ceremonies since the excavation of the mound existed in a house named Pueblo Alto has led to finding a lot of pots which are believed to be used in ceremonies. On the contrary, the lecturer believes that there are a lot of other materials found beside the pots such as building materials which are useless materials left over. The lecture also points out that the pots were regular trash of meals used by construction workers. To conclude, the lecture opposes each theory by explaining extra information.
