TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

In this lecture, none of the theories about what the great houses were used for is convincing. It reputes all of the three suppositions due to the following reasons.

First of all, the reading suggests that the great houses could be used as residential houses, which is similar to “apartment buildings”. Though it may sound reasonable, it casts serious doubt because the circumstance inside the houses are not like what it looks like outside. If someone lived in the house, there should be many fire places for cooking. However, there are not enough fire places especially in larger houses, where the fire places could only serve ten families with more than a hundred rooms.

Secondly, the theory of food storage is not supported either. If they were used to contain food like maize, they must have some containers to store food, which is uncovered. In addition, some maize may drop to the floor, but there is nothing left here.

Thirdly, the ceremonial centers are not what they are used to be because there are other materials beside the old material, such as sand , stones and some construction material. Most of these are not used for being built. So it is not good evidence to identify the great houses.

In conclusion, the great houses are not used for residential houses, storage places or ceremonial centers. We still need more evidence to prove what the “great houses” are used for.
