TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including ki

The reading passage shows doubt about the accuracy of the memoir wrote by Chevalier. It claims that Chevalier wrote self made story in the memoir to make his life more interesting. However, the professor from the lecture says the memoir is pretty accurate as some research works have done.

First, the article questioned that if Chevalier had been very rich, why he needed to borrow hansome amount of money from a merchant. The professor refutes the point by saying that borrowing money does not mean Chevailer was poor. The memoir shows that he spent a lot of money on parties and gambling he needed to sell some assets to get money back. As the process is a lengthy one, in the mean time he borrowed some money from the merchant.

Secondly, the reading passage claims that it is impossible to write the exact conversation made by Chevailer and Voltaier after many years later. However, the professor says that witness from that time period confirmed that Chevailer wrote those conversation every night for several years. For that reason the conversation was so accurate.

Thirdly, the reading refutes that Chevailer did not break from Venice jail, rather he might have bribed the jailers through his political connections to get out. The professor opposes the point by saying that other prisoners with Chevailer had more powerfull political connections but they could not get out of the jail. That explains it was really hard to bribe the jailers to get out of the jail. The professor also added that, later it was discovered that the ceiling was repaired of the room in which Chevailer stayed. Therefore it explains that if Chevailer did not excaped from a hole in the ceiling it did not needed to be repaired.
