TPO-09 - Integrated Writing Task Car manufacturers and governments have been eagerly seeking a replacement for the automobile's main source of power, the internal-combustion engine. By far the most promising alternative source of energy for cars is the hy

Both the article and the lecture discuss the fuel-cell engine from different perspectives. The article states that the fuel-cell engine will replace the internal-combustion cars in few years and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor believes that fuel-cell engine is not devoid of disadvantages and he casts doubt on all claims made by the author.

First, the reading states that while the internal-combustion engine depends on the petroleum which is a limited resource, on the other hand, the fuel-cell engine depends on hydrogen which is available in huge amount in the environment. This point was argued by the professor. He says that hydrogen is not easily available since these engine used hydrogen in the purely liquefied form which is hard to produce. it is produced artificially by cooling the hydrogen to a very low degree, and that needs a lot of work.

Second, while the article posits that the fuel-cell engine will reduce environmental pollution since it does not produce harmful substances like carbon dioxide, the professor, nonetheless, rebuts this point. He states that this engine, indeed, is not the optimum solution for the environmental problems, Because it also carries many hazards to the environment. This is due to the fact that in order to produce the purified hydrogen scientists need to burn the coal or oil, and this process is enough to harm the surrounding. Thus even if the engine is friendly to the ecosystem the factories are not.

Finally, the reading claims that the people will soon shift to use the fuel-cell engine because it is cheaper than the ordinary ones since it consume less fuel. However, the professor refutes this point. He says that the new engine is actually expensive. due to the fact that it manufactured from platinum which is highly expensive. Moreover, the extensive effort to find a replacement of the platinum was failed
