TPO 12- Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. But we do not have many records of what she looked like. For a long time, the only accepted image of Austen was an amateur sketch of an adult Austen made by her sister Cassandra. However recently a professionally painted, full-length portrait of a teenage girl owned by a member of the Austen family has come up for sale. Although the professional painting is not titled Jane Austen, there are good reasons to believe she is the subject.

The reading and lecture are both about portrait of Jane Austin. The author of the reading believes that the portrait was in fact the famous novelist when she was young. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that his arguments are inaccurate compared to facts.

First of all, the author points out that they used the portrait of Jane Austen for her edition of her letters. The article notes that family members claim that it was the true portrait of the novelist. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that it is impossible that the portrait in the letter was her because she was dead 70 years ago. Furthermore, he argues that although family members asserted that it was Jane Austen, but they never saw her and not sure whether it is really Jane Austin.

Secondly, the author contends that portrait resembles the sketch made by Cassandra. The article establishes that the facial features resembles Jane Austin. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that the image was from Jane relatives and they have large family. Moreover, he elaborates on this by mentioning that the portrait looks like Mary Anne which is her distant niece which has a great resemblance to Jane Austin.

Finally, the author states that the portrait was unsigned and undated. The article denotes that Ozias Humprhrey was hired by the family of Austen when she was teenager. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the portrait has the same style with Humphrey. He puts forth the idea that the canvas used was not the same used in the portrait of Austen. In addition, the black canvas was sold by William leg and he did not sell his canvas in London when Austen was a teenager.
