The reading suggests a salvage logging method is a practical and beneficial method for removing the injured trees after a forest fire. However, the professor casts doubt on this method and believes that it causes serious damages.

First, based on the passage, the burned forest is chocked with dead trees. These dead trees do not let new tree to grow since it takes a lot of time to decompose. Therefore, salvage logging is an excellent method that makes room for fresh trees. In contrast, the professor states that cleaning up the dead trees is not the right method for helping new trees. The new trees need nutrients which can be provided by the decomposing old or burned tree. By doing salvage logging we decline the necessary nutrients for the future generation of trees.

Second, according to the passage, dead trees not only take space but also, are suitable habitat for insects such as spruce bark beetle. Removing dead trees by salvage logging removes these insects. Therefore, they can not harm health of the forest. Nevertheless, the author asserts that the existence of these insects is not very dangerous for forests. There are numerous other harmful insects in forests but, there are other animals like birds that consume these harmful insects. Therefore, Salvage logging has more harmfull effects compare to these insects on the forests.

Third, the reading specifies that salvage logging has plenty of economic benefits. It produces additional jobs for residence and also, industries can use the wood of damage tree by natural disasters which may help the economy. On the contrary, the professor explains that it is true that this method makes additional jobs but these jobs are temporary and do not last long enough for people. In addition, we have to consider that locating these woods need experts to use vehicles like helicopters which residence can not do it. So, it makes job opportunites for outsiders.
