The reading passage states that the number of birds is decreasing in the united states. The author mentions that human activities and population growth cause this decrease. The professor, on the other hand, rejects all the reasons mentioned in the essay.
Firstly, the reading passage asserts that population growth and settlements destroy bird habitats, then the number of birds will decline. The professor, in contrast, rejects this argument and explains that urban developments are bad for some types of birds but provide better and larger habitats for others. So, people do not prey on birds as the population is increasing. Then, of course, the population of some types of birds is declining, but the population of others is increasing such as pigeons on street and so on.
Secondly, the reading averts that because of human population growth, more land will be needed to use for agriculture. Therefore, more bird habitats will disappear. On the contrary, the professor refutes this reason and explains that less and less land is being used every year and provide more productive crops, so there is no need to destroy bird habitats.
Finally, the reading passage argues, along with human population growth, more chemical pesticides would be needed that they pollute water and food chain in which, in turn, harm birds. The professor, conversely, rebuts this explanation and expresses that today people are aware of importance of the environment and they do not contaminate it. As a result, Not only new and much pesticides are developed, but also there are many plants that genetically designed unattractive to pests and do not harm birds.
