Although the author supports three main hypotheses to address the reasons of declination of Torreya, a type of evergreen tree in the state of Florida, the professor finds all the reasons dubious and brings some counter reasons to refute them all.
Considering the first reasons, the reading holds the view that the favorable condition to grow this type of tree is a cool and wet microclimate. Reestablishing them in same place where they thrived thousands years ago would be a great idea. However, the professor refers to the fact that reestablishing them is not a practical idea to save them due to the fact that global warming results in increasing temperature of whole area and it influences on microclimates as well in which makes them unfavorable factor to survive.
Furthermore, the reading material contends that translocating them to cooler lands of north Florida called assisted migration, absolutely help them survive. On the other hand, the lecturer finds it unconvincing and asserts that assisted migration causes harm for all species and plants in that area. For example, Black locust trees destroyed all plants when they were translocated to north.
Eventually, the reading passage argues that preserving them in research center not only leads them survive from extinction but also they can be used for conducting research. On the contrary, the professor states that research centers do not have the capacity to protect the long and diverse trees which cannot resist in diseases when they are in minority.
