TPO 18: integrated writing task

The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about approaches for protecting the Torreya trees from extinction. The author proposes three ways to address the problem. However, the lecturer finds all of the proposed solutions inefficient.

First of all, the reading claims that the reestablishment of Torreya in microclimates in north Florida which have cooler and damper climate than its surrounding environment would be a potential solution. However, the lecturer underlines the fact that microclimates in Florida are greatly affected by their surrounding environment. Due to global warming, the temperature in these surrounding areas has increased and also the wetlands have been drained. Hence, it is unlikely that Torreya would be able to survive within these microclimates.

Furthermore, the author asserts that the transplantation of Torreya in other cooler locations that have a better condition for their growth would be a second option. In contrast, the speaker refutes this proposal due to the fact that transplantation has unpredicted outcomes for plants and trees of the host environment. She gives the example of a kind of species that were transplanted in another location by humans. Then it grew aggressively in that location and killed off native endangered plants of that location.

Finally, the reading passage claims that seeds and saplings of Torreya can be transferred to research centers and preserved and monitored in a lab environment. Also, researchers can conduct research on them about their survival. On the contrary, the lecturer dismisses this option due to the fact that a species should be genetically diverse and have enough population in order to resist the diseases in the long term in a research center. Research centers have not this capacity for a large population of Torreya and these threes are not capable to be survived in diseases in the long term.
