TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

The reading and the lecture discuss the benefits of planting genetically modification trees from different perspectives. The article believes that modified trees provides many advantages. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that none of those ideas are convincing.
First of all, the author of the reading points out that the genetically modified trees are able to survive than natural trees. This point is challenged by the lecture. He restates the fact that because natural trees are diverse, so they can resist to climate changes. Meanwhile, modified trees are uniform, therefore, when the climate changes or insects attack, they tend to be destroyed totally.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that genetically modified trees promise to bring economic benefits. It is stated that modified trees grow rapidly and give greater yield of fruit. The lecture rebuts this point by saying that people can use the seeds of natural trees to grow them annually. However, the modified trees need to be planted every year and people cannot collect their seeds to replant them. Therefore, it costs a lot of money each year.
Finally, the author of the reading states that the use of genetically modified trees can a prevent overexploitation of wild trees. The lecture on the other hand, opposes this point by stating that these trees will cause damage to the other wild trees because they compete for the resources like sunlight and water along with the natural trees.
