In this set of materials, the reading passage and the lecturer discuss replace gasoline with the Ethanol fuel that produces by plants. Although the reading provides that the ethanol fuel not practical and useful solution, the speaker refutes this idea through several reasons which I will describe in this reporter.
First, the reading discusses that ethanol fuel like a gasoline release amount of carbon dioxide on to the atmosphere, and it maks green house effects. The lecturer, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that the ethanol fuel will not add carbon dioxide to the air. Because it is produced by lants such as corn. So, plants need CO2 for growing. Therefore, if the ethanol fuel realises carbon dioxide to the air, the process of growing plants adsorption co2 and remove it from the air.
Furthermore, unlike the passage which states that using plants for producing ethanol will result in disappearing substantial source of animals' food, the professor argues that ethanol can be made from cellulose and cellulose is available in different plant parts that are not eaten by an animal. Therefore, producing ethanol does not necessarily have to diminish animal food resources.
Finally, although the reading passage says that ethanol price cannot compete with gasoline without government subsidies, the speaker disagrees by mentioning that government support will not always be needed. He adds that when more people use ethanol, producers will increase their production and subsequently the price of the ethanol decreases. He says that recent research showed that three-time greater produce of ethanol will result in a forty per cent drop in its price.
