TPO 22: integrated writing task

The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about whether ethanol would be a good alternative to gasoline or not. The author of the passage holds the view that replacing gasoline by ethanol is not a good option. However, the lecturer takes a radically different view due to some of the reasons.

First of all, The author explains that burning ethanol, just like gasoline, releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which is a greenhouse gas and it resulted in global warming. Hence, it does not solve any environmental problem. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this notion by pointing out that growing plants in which ethanol is produced from them could absorb the released carbon dioxide resulted from burning ethanol. Hence, this plant would remove carbon dioxide and considering this facet using ethanol would be beneficial.

Secondly, the author claims that the main sources of ethanol are plants like corn which are also a main source of food for farm animals. Production a huge quantity of ethanol requires a huge proportion of corn currently grown in the United States. Therefore, this choice would reduce a substantial source of animal food. Conversely, the lecturer rejects this claim by explaining that a part of the plant which contains Seloloze is used for ethanol production. This part of the plant is not eaten by farm animals. Hence, production ethanol in large quantities would not restrict the food source of animals.

Finally, the reading passage asserts that if the government's subsidies for ethanol production removed, ethanol prices would be more expensive than gasoline. Therefore, it is not economical to replace gasoline with ethanol. On the other hand, the speaker refuses this assertion by pointing out that when the production of ethanol increased the prices would be cheaper. For instance, if the production increased to 3 times, the price would be lower by almost 40%. Hence it will be economical to use ethanol.
