TPO-22 - Integrated Writing Task Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasol

The author of the reading passage and the professor both discuss whether or not the ethanol is a good replacement for gasoline. The author is against this idea by expressing three disadvantages of using the ethanol fuel replaces the gasoline. However, the professor thinks that the author's reasons contain some defects.

First of all, the author states that while burning the ethanol fuel, it still generate carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Therefore, there is no advantage for the environment to substitute the gasoline to ethanol. On the contrary, the professor indicates that although burning the ethanol fuel will release the carbon dioxide, processing of growing the ethanol will remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Because ethanol is a plant, the plant will absorb the carbon dioxide to generate the nutrition for itself.

In addition, the author claims that the substantial source of food for animals would disappear due to most of the ethanol is corn. And the corns are the essential food for farm animals such as cows and chickens. However, the professor asserts that ethanol fuel is made of the plant's cell wall, which is not eaten by the animals. Therefore, using the cell wall part of the plants won't decrease the food sources for animals.

Finally, the author raises the point that because the government supports the tax subsidies, the price of the ethanol fuel and the gasoline are equal. Since the government stops help producers, the price of ethanol would raise up. On the other hand, the professor asserts that the government won't do this for a long time. Because when ethanol fuel becomes more available, the price will decrease. According to the study.
