The reading passage states that, the population of cedar trees in northwestern North America, declined more than a century now, and provides 3 reasons for support that. The professor, on the other hand, does not agree with brought up by the passage and offer some counterclaims to refute them.
First of all, the author says that, decrease of population yellow cedar is due to insect parasites, such as bark beetle that attack to cedar trees and larvae eat wood. Conversely, the speaker believes that these type of trees are resistant and leaves of them are toxic, so they have power chemical materials that damages insects and may kill them.
Secondly, the article asserts that cedar trees are a main diet od brown beer that eat tree bark and claw the cedar, bark has high sugar and suitable for brown bear. However, the lecture states that, brown bear damages to cut trees but not kill them and decline cedar. He also illustrates that in island where cedar decrease, there are not brown bears and is irresponsible of death of cedar.
As a result, the massage climes that changes of climate effects on root systems and modify temperatures, and roots are sensitive and freezing on cold winter. On the contrary, the lecture rejects the author’s idea that in low temperature roots become freezing and he explains that in low elevations where it is warm and in high elevation is cold, declining of cedar occur more than high elevations that temperature is cold and freezing. He says that climate changes maybe damages roots and they become more sensitive, but this is not cause of declining.
