TPO-23 - Integrated Writing Task

The issue both the reading and the listening focus on is the cause of the decline of the yellow cedar’s population. However, the listening opposes the reading at three main points.

At the first point, the reading states that insect parasites may be the fundamental cause of the declination. According to the listening, healthy yellow cedar acquires a type of substance that can kill the bark beetles so that they are unlikely to suffer from the insect parasite. The trees that endure the insect parasite have already been sick or on the edge of death. Therefore, the insect parasite cannot be the main cause of the yellow cedar decline.

At the second point, the reading believes that the brown bear can be attributed to the overall decline of the yellow cedar. The professor rebuts this belief. He argues that the decline of yellow cedar happens both on the mainland and islands along the coast. Whereas, There is no brown bear on the islands at all.

At the third point, the reading mentions that the change of climate is to blame for the declination. On the contrary, the professor points out that, if the rapid change of climate is the cause, the decline of the yellow cedar on the higher elevation with colder temperature must be larger than that on the lower elevation with warmer temperature. But the fact is on the opposite.
