TPO-23 - Integrated Writing Task Populations of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been steadily declining for more than a century now, since about 1880. Scientists have advanced several hypotheses expla

The reading passage introduces three theories to explain the yellow cedar species declining in northwestern North America. However, the professor in the listening thinks none of these theories are proper and still no clear evidence has been approved to explain its population's declining.

First, the reading states that the cedar bark beetle insect could be the cause of decreasing cedar species. The professor argues against this point by stating that healthy cedar trees have more resistance than other trees species due to its chemical substance that considered harmful to bark beetle insect. Also, he mentions that the recorded instances of beetle attacks to cedar were only for trees that already damaged and weak.

Second, the passage states that bears sometimes eat cedars trees, which may be responsible for the decline. The professor contends this point by saying that even though bears feed on cedars plant, but this won't affect the entire population of the species. Moreover, he points out that there was an island that no bears exist there, and the declining of cedars species continue. Thus. bears are not responsible for decreasing cedars population.

Finally, the reading states that climate change is could be the cause of the decline due to its impact on yellow cedar’s sensitive root growing. The professor points out an important point that ignored by the theory which is more trees are dying in low elevation in comparison to high elevation, which contradicts the reading point.

All in all, the professor disagrees with what is presented in the passage. The reading provides three theories account for yellow cedar population’s decline; however, the professor casts doubt on each theory.
