TPO-24 - Integrated Writing Task Animal fossils usually provide very little opportunity to study the actual animal tissues, because in fossils the animals' living tissues have been largely replaced by minerals. Thus, scientists were very excited recently

The reading passage discusses the discovery of T. rex’s fossils, which are presumed by the scientists to contain the remains of blood vessels, red blood cells, and collagen matrix. However, the lecturer questions the validity of these assumptions.

First, the presence of a soft, organic substance inside the channels of T. rex's bones are claimed to be the actual blood vessels. The lecturer contradicts this assertion, explaining that the organic substance is more likely to be the residue left by bacteria. Bacteria occasionally colonize the hollow channels inside dead organisms and left traces of materials.

Second, the reddish spheres containing iron are believed to be remnants of red blood cells. The lecturer challenges that other primitive animals found at the same site also contain these spheres yet didn't have red blood cells while they were alive. Furthermore, the lecturer provides another explanation that the origin of the spheres is probably just reddish minerals.

Finally, the scientists states that the fibrous protein is collagen, which is a main component of living bone tissue. The lecturer points out that collagen cannot last more than 100,000 years and that the fossils of T. rex are 70-million-year-old. Consequently, the collagen should have vanished without trace. In fact, the collagen could be left by researchers handling the bones.
