In this set of materials, the reading passage states that a set of clay jars were discovered in Iraq that they have 2200 years old. Some archaeologists believe that these vessels were used for produced electricity like batteries, but the reading provides 3 theories against this idea. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading point by pointing out the problem of each theory.

First, the reading indicates that archaeologists cannot find other materials and containers which belong to the vessels that they may produce electricity. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this idea by mentioning that these vessels had been discovered by local people, not by archaeologists. So, local people may not recognize the importance of other containers. Also, conductors may not interest for local people, and they may throw them away.

Furthermore, the reading argues that the copper cylinders as the same as the copper cylinders discovered in the ruins of Seleucia; hence, these vessels may have the same role as copper cylinders for holding scrolls of sacred texts; conversely, what the professor believes is different. She points out that probably these cylinders originally designed for holding scores, but it does not prove any things. Later, people understood that they could produce electricity if they used liquid and iron in these cylinders. Moreover, goods did not design for one purpose, people could adapt them for other purposes.

Finally, according to the reading, ancient people did not need electricity, so the vessels would have been useless for them. However, the lecturer believes that by touching batteries, it makes some shock to the human body, and people would not able to see this power. So, ancient people thought that it was a magic power. Furthermore, they used electricity for healing and reducing pains in muscles.
