The problem that is discoused here relates to one specifice type of freshwater shellfish by the name Zebra mussel, and the results of changing their habitat from Eastern Europe, which is their natural living site, to North America, by humankind. The passage suggest that their population can not be controled and they can reproduce themselves pretty rapidly but the lecturer disagress and bring up a few reasons.

Firstly, the problem of unintentional migration of these shellfishes are mentioned and the passage believe that the process of dislocating these creatures by ships can not be stoped. However, the lecturer suggest that the ships can fill in their tanks with sea water, which because of the salt in it, can kill the Zebra mussels.

The second reason that the passage gives relates to the problem that in the new habitat, there will not be any predator for Zebra mussels and so their population will get out of hand. The lecturer refute this reason and seggests that soon after entering a new habitat, the Zebra mussels' predators will show up due to the new source of food which is introduced, so that will control the population smoothly.

Finally, the last reason coserns the food resources of the natural creatures living in the site where the Zebra mussels is now introduced to. The passage belives, the fact that Zebra mussels consumes planktons will cause the population of other natural creatures, which also feed from planktons, to decrease. The lecturer disagrees and believes other type of fishes which do not consume plankton will survive.
