TPO 26- Integrated

As it was stated in the reading passage, it is the author’s belief that zebra mussel's invasion cannot be stopped and it poses a serious threat to freshwater fish populations. And he provided three reasons to substantiate his claim. On the contrary the lecturer finds the justification of the author unconvincing and utterly repudiates the claim by providing some counter arguments.
Initially the writer brought up the idea that the history of these animals suggests that their invasion might be unstoppable. However, the lecturer is thoroughly doubtful about the reliability of this idea. As he points out that they might have been unstoppable in the past but there are ways to stop them now. He continues that the ships can refill the ballast water with ocean water. Because the mussels cannot live in salt water.
Another emphasized point in the reading was that the mussels can dominate their new habitat. On the other hand the lecturer refutes this one too by asserting that the author's statement may be true at the beginning. But once the birds get used to their existence in the area, they can consume them for food and these mussels are a very good food source for birds. So it's not like that they don't have any predators.
As the last point, the author drew attention to the fact that the mussels are likely to cause a decline in overall fish population in habitats where they become dominant. Yet again, the lecturer considers this idea invalid as well by pointing out that the mussels can have a negative impact on plankton eating fish while, they can have a positive impact on the bottom eating fish population. So the author's general statement about fish population decrease cannot be true overall.
