Little ice age

The reading and the lecture are both about what caused the little ice age, which happened in many parts of world. The author of the reading believes there are three causes that made the little ace happen. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. he is of the opinion that the author's theories are out of date and can't account for the cases.

First of all, the author suggests that the period happened due to changes of ocean currents. it is mentioned that during warm periods, the glaciers melted and huge amount of fresh water got into the climate effecting current called the gulf stream. Therefore, it caused the little ice age. The argument is refuted by the lecturer. he says if the gulf stream was affected, then only Europe and some parts of America could have affected, but in the little ice age even Southern Hemisphere were affected. Thus, this can't be the cause.

Secondly, the article posits that the ice age was taken place due to volcanic activities. The article notes volcanic eruptions can block the sun light, making the temperature to be lower, and several eruptions happened during the litte ice age. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on this by asserting that if huge eruptions took place, then large amount of unusual things happen. As a result, people who lived during that time would notice these strange phenomenan such as grey snow, etc and could have reported. he elaborates on this by mentioning that no such reports have been found, indicating the eruptions did took place were not strong enough to cause huge effects.

Finally, it is stated in the article that during the little ice age human population was lower than previous or after eras. The author establishes that agritulture became impossible when trees grew in that age, and consequently as a result of lots of trees, the carbon dioxide level were decreased by the trees, lowering the global temperature. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes that there was not enough time for this happen. he puts forth the idea that the humam population soon rebounded and they likely cut down trees again, making possible for agriculture. So growth of trees were not long enough to cause it.
