In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture deal with the Little Ice Age. Regarding this topic, the author in the passage asserts that there are convincing reasons, which resulted to the Little Ice Age. However, the lecturer contradicts the author’s assertions by saying that the three reasons are flawed.
First of all, according to the lecture, it is unreliable that the disruption of the Gulf Stream led to the Little Ice Age. This is because the Gulf Stream had an influence on only specific areas such as Europe and North America. However, it could not cause to the cooling of southern areas. This counters the author’s view point that the Little Ice Age resulted from the Gulf Stream affected by freshwater.
Secondly, the lecturer goes on to say that even if he concedes that lots of eruptions of volcano are enough to play a vital role in cooling the Earth, this concept is unconvincing. If the concept was true, there would be several reports about unusual visual effects, such as colorful sunsets or snow being grey color. However, there is no report about these effects. This challenges the author’s claim that The Little Ice Age came from the decreasing the global temperature caused by several volcanic activities.
Lastly, the lecture maintains that the drastically reduced human population never be a possible reason of the Little Ice Age. It was impossible that the reduced population made more forest trees that causes to the decline of carbon dioxide, this is because the population grew back to the previous levels very quickly. Thus, without enough time, the population could not have an effect on the cooling of the global temperature. This rebuts the author’s argument that the occurrence of the Little Ice Age can be sufficiently explained by the reduced human activities for farming.
