TPO-28 - Integrated Writing Task Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him

The reading passage and professor both discuss the authenticity of evidences attirbuted to the claim that Robert E. Peary reached the North Pole. The author contends that Peary reaced the North Pole, stating three conspicuous reasons so as to support. However, the lecturer, having a critical point of view, casts a shadow of doubt on what the author proposes. She states that there is no solid evidence that Peary reached the North Pole and the mentioned evidences in the article are unconvincing, so she refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the author claims that according to the conclusion of a committee of the National Geographic Society, Peary indeed reached the North Pole. One the contrary, the professor, not having been convinced, declares that since the committee was not objective, their conclusion cannot be considered valid. She proceeds to state that most of the committee members where colse friends of Peary, and they had contributed a geat deal of money in his expedition. Moreover, the investigation only took two days untile the committee reachd a conclusion, and they did not carefully test Peary's records. Consequently, the conclusion is biased and is not strong.

Second, the author posits that a recent expedition, perfomred by Tom Avery, supports that Peary could reach the North Pole in only 37 days after leaving Ellesmere Island. The lecturer opposes this point, saying that Avery's expedition differed in many aspects from Peary's trip. She sheds some light on this premise, stating that the weight of matterials that they carried were different. Avery did not carry food, and its food was droped by ari plain. Furthermore, Avery traveled in suitable weather conditions, but weather was harsh when Peary traveled.

Finally, the author highlights the fact that the anlysis of photoragphs taken by Peary revealed the fact that he took them in the North Pole. On other hand, the professor states that the photographs prove nothing. To elucidate more on this issue, she explains that scientists analyize photographs' shadows precisely to reach a conclusion. However, Peary's photographs are taken 100 years ago, with primitve cameras. In addition, photos are faded over time, that means shadows are also faded. As a resutl, one cannot use the photographs to determine whether they are authentic or not.
