TPO-28 - Integrated Writing Task Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him

While the issue both the reading and listening focus on is the validity of the claim made by Pearl that he had reached the North Pole, the listening casts doubt at three main points.
At the first point, the reading states that a committee, which was established by the National Geographic Society, took Pearl’s record and equipment into close investigation and concluded that his claim is persuasive and consistent. According to the listening, the committee include Pearl’s close friends, who had funded for his trip. Therefore, the investigation carried out by the committee was objective. In addition, the committee did not examine carefully which result in a biased and untrustworthy.
At the second point, the reading believes that Pearl’s claim that his expedition took 37 days to reach North Pole is possible since a British explorer Tom Avery had make the same trek in less than 37 days and the used the same kind of equipments. On the contrary, the listening argues that Avery carried less weight than Pearl did since Avery’s food was dropped by plane. Furthermore, the weather during Avery’s trip was favourable, which was different from the bad weather during Pearl’s trip. As a result, Pearl’s trip was totally different from that of Avery.
At the last point, the reading mentions that measurement of shadow in Pearl’s photograph helps to calculate the Surf S Position of the sun, which exactly match the position as it should be in North Pole. It strengthens the argument that Pearl ad reached the North Pole. However, the listening confirms that the technique, which was used in measuring the shadow, is not precise. The photograph was taken by a primitive camera, which made it look very faded and blurred. Accordingly, it cannot be used to calculate with high accuracy. This is a direct contradiction to what is indicated in the reading passage.
