TPO-29 - Integrated Writing Task Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive,

Although the author provides three main hypotheses to support the idea that Edmontosaurus were used to migrate in harsh climate of Np towards South every winter, the professor finds them dubious and brings up some counter reasons to refute them all.

Firstly, the author claims that these animals were plant eaters and fed on vegetable. So in order to find more food resources, they might have migrated to the places such south that were more likely to find food. However, the professor states that a million years ago, the summers in North Pole were warm enough that the summers were 24-hour-sunshine. The condition was proper to thrive plentiful vegetable and plants. In winter these plants died and they could readily use dead plants up and survive in harsh climate.

Secondly, the author states that as long as moving in herd means good orientation for migration, this would have let them to migrate in herds since lots of fossils of these large animals have been dug out and indicated the fact that they lived together. According to the professor there are some possible reasons that animals live and move together in the same land and one of them is keeping themselves safe from being prey by predators. For instance, some large plant eater such as a kind of elk live in herd but do not migrate. Thus, it is more unlikely that they moved in groups.

Eventually, the author argues that they were fast enough to reach the warmer places. Conversely, the professor asserts that this is true that they had the ability to run fast to reach their destinations, but it was true about the adult animals not juveniles and younger dinosaurs. Not only did they slow the speed of herd but also the adults could not leave them alone and keep up their ways. Thus, they could not migrate in harsh climate.
