TPO-29 - Integrated Writing Task Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive,

The reading and listening are both about the existence of Edmontosaurus in the region of Alaska's North slope. The author of the passage believes that these dinosaurs survived the cold arctic winter by migrating to the southern hospitable regions. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made by the author. She argues this migratory behavior of the animal.

Firstly, the author says that winter climate of north slope did not support any vegetation. As such he asserts that the Edmontosaur's migrated to temperate regions for food. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the animals did not migrate since winter also had enough food reserves. The lecturer says that during winter there was dead plant matter available for the dinosaurs to live on.

Secondly, the author contends that animals lived in herd that supported their migratory movement. The article notes that modern migratory animal live and migrate as herds. The lecturer rebuts the argument. She suggests that there can be other motive for Edmontosaur's herd behavior. She elaborates on this by mentioning that animals would move in herds in order to defend themselves from their predators.

Finally, the author states that they could travel long distances from the harsh climate to warmer areas. The article establishes that they could run fast for movement. The lecturer on the other hand posits that since the juvenile Edmontosaur's could not move as fast as the adults. She puts forth the idea that adults cannot leave their small ones in the harsh climate which ruled out their long journey. Thus she effectively challenges the claims made in the article.
