TPO-29 - Integrated Writing Task Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive,

The reading and the lecture are both about a North Slope dinosaur, the elephant-sized edmontosaur. The passage supports the hypothesis that edmontosaurs survived the winter migrating to warmer regions. On the other hand, according to the lecture, the hypothesis that edmontosaurs migrated every winter is not convincing.
First, on the reading, the author mentions that edmontosaurs’ diet holds the hypothesis that they used to migrate, since no plants were growing during North Slope winter. However, the lecturer says that the edmontosaurs did not have to migrate to find food. According to her, a hundred million of years ago, the temperature was warmer than today, and having extensive daylight during, reaching 24 hours of sun at the pick of summer. This resulted in an environment with extremely good conditions to the growth of plans, and during winter, when this vegetation died, a lot of nutritional food could be easily found by the edmontosaurs.

Second, the reading supports the idea that dead edmontosaurs could be found on the same site, which suggests that they used to live in herds and migrate. The author uses modern migratory animals as an example, like caribou and buffalo, in order to support the migration hypothesis. Nevertheless, the lecturer mentions that it is not possible to affirm that edmontosaurs used to migrate just because they lived in herds. Animals leave in herds for several reasons, like having extra protection from predators, which is useful to animals who live in the same area as well. She uses the Roosevelt Elk as a modern example to illustrate this, since they are large plant eaters which leaves in herds but do not migrate.

Third, the passage affirms that edmontosaurs were capable of migrating extensive distances in order to reach regions with warmer conditions. In contrast with this, according to the lecture, although the fact that adult edmontosaurs were strong enough to migrate long distances, younger edmontosaurs, the juveniles, were not physically capable to travel great distances required to reach warmer territories. In light of this, young edmontosaurs were so slow that would be impossible to the herd reach the destination. In addition, she states that the adults could not leave the juveniles behind because they were incapable of surviving on their own, so the whole herd had to stay and survive to the cold weather conditions together.
