Both the reading material and the lecture talk about whether ancient Greeks use the burning mirror to set the fire or not. The reading material takes three reasons to refute the use of burning mirror. However, the professor in the lecture thinks completely different from the reading.
First of all, the reading material believes that ancient Greeks were not enough technologically advanced to manufacture such a wide mirror and precise parabolic curvature. On the other hand, The professor states that Although a single sheet of copper could not be parabolize ancient Greeks used an assembly of copper sheets for manufacturing the mirror because that the assembly of copper sheets behaviors different from single sheets.
Secondly, the reading passage says that using a burning mirror take a long time, around ten minutes, to set fire on wooden objects. Therefore, this device was impractical and ineffective. In contrast, the professor has a different idea. Although she believes that this matter is correct for the woody boat, she says that most of the boats used a sticky matter which its name is pitch. this sticky material could set up the fire quickly in seconds not minutes.
Finally, the reading passage says that ancient Greeks had flaming arrows which could work such a burning mirror. Therefore, there was not any reason for them to use the burning mirror. However, the professor refutes this notion. She states that the Romans were familiar with flaming arrows. Also, they could see that the enemy wanted to set the fire and they could see the flaming arrow. But, when the ancient Greeks used the burning mirrors, the enemy just saw the mirror, not the fire and mirrors made the enemy surprise. Hence, the burning mirrors were more effective than the flaming arrows.
