TPO-30 - Integrated Writing Task A little over 2,200 years ago, the Roman navy attacked the Greek port city of Syracuse. According to some ancient historians, the Greeks defended themselves with an ingenious weapon called a "burning mirror": a polished co

Both reading and lecture are about burning mirror which is a polished copper surface used by Greek to attack back the Roman Navy. The author of the reading believes that this burning mirror is just a myth and provided three reasons of support. While the lecturer counter act this opinion. She says that such a weapon was really used with the Greek people.
First, the author points out that making such mirror needs advanced technology, which was not available at this old time. The article notes that mirror which can focus the sun ray's and turn it into a burning power needs to be made in special shape called parabola, also needs to be very wide. Making such a device was really hard on the old age with little advanced technology and science. The lecturer challenges these point. She says that this isn't hard for Greek people with such a great history and civilization.
Second, the author contends that such a mirror will take long time to burn an object. The author mentions an experiment to illustrate his point. In the experiment they focus the sun's rays on an wooden object thirty meter away. It took ten minutes to start the burning process while the object is stable and not moving, which is not applicable for the Roman ships. On contrary the lecturer doesn't agree. She says that It wouldn't take such a long time to burn a ship. She further elaborates that the ships are made of wood and another material called pitch used to stabilize and attache wood blanks together and in same time works as water proof. This material is flammable, which means it can catch fire in seconds then spread the fire to the wood parts of the ship.
Third, the author says that burning mirror is not an improvement in comparison to the flaming arrows used by Greek as well. Flaming arrows appear to be more effective as it will not take such long time and can be applied from longer distance. On the other side, the lecturer is totally against this opinion, She mentions that the roman were on knowledge by the flaming arrows and they can see it while it comes to target their ships. While they can't determine exactly where the burning mirror action will take place. So it turns to be kind of surprising to them. They will not have time or equipment to avoid that. This turns the burning mirror to be more effective.
