TPO-32 - Integrated Writing Task
The author of the reading passage and the professor both discuss the theories about the odd sounds. The author mentions that Russian submarines detected some strange sounds in the deep ocean, and the author proposes some theories to explain this situation. However, the professor discords with the ideas mentioned in the reading passage. He offers reasons to oppose the argument of this article.
First of all, in the article, the author claims that the strange noises were made by some orca whales. The professor indicates that orca whales live on the surface of the sea, and submarine moves in the deep ocean. Therefore, if the noises were caused by some orca whales, it would be impossible for these submarines to detect these noises. Moreover, if these orca whales were close to these submarines, these submarines could use sonar to detect the existence of these orca whales. As a result, the noises would not be produced by orca whales.
Second, the author states that the sounds were caused by giant squid. However, the professor mentions that if these sounds were made by giant squid, it would be not possible that the sounds happened from the 1960s to the 1980s and disappeared after two decades. Therefore, the noises would not be produced by giant squid.
Finally, the author of the article indicated that the sounds were caused by some military technology. However, the professor points out that there would not be submarines moving so fast. Moreover, there would not have the engine of a submarine produces such noises as the strange noises. Thus, the noises would not be produced by other submarines.
