The listening and the reading materials have a doubt on application of carved stone balls which are founded in Scotland. The writer puts forward 3 main hypotheses, which are refuted by following speaker.

Firstly, the writer suggests that these balls are used as a tool for defending and fighting against enemies or hunting goals. In addition, some holes on them represent that ancient people hold balls through these sites easier. while the speaker view this issue from an opposite view. According to her, it is not seen any fracture or damage on balls, and they are really well preserved. If they were used as a weapons, they would have some signs of crack or fracture on them.

The second preposition offered by the writer is that the balls may perhaps use as a standard device for weighting foods or other related stuffs, However, the speaker casts doubt on this assumption by saying that different kind of stones are used for making those balls. As a results, they have various densities and are not equal in weight. So, it is not advisable to think that they were applied for measuring quantities of crops.

Last, the reading proposes that the ornamented balls may had a social aim instead of practical usage and detected important level of their owners. On contrary, the professor holds an opposite view. She claim that many of these balls have really simple designs and are not found in any grave of high ranking people. Thus, it is not possible that they were used as a tool for distinguish the community level.

Overall, the ideas mentioned in the listening opposes the ideas in the reading passage in that carved stone balls were not applied as weapon, measuring tool, or representing social level of their owners.
