In the reading part, the author contends that the archaeologists found carved stone balls in Scotland and they stats three theories for the purpose of these specific artifacts including; using as a weapon, measuring weight and representing social status. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the reading points by representing the evidence and convincing reasons.
First of all, the writer claims that one of the most possible uses of the carved stone ball was for fighting and protecting the people because it had some holes on its surface that might represent the role of this artifact for fighting. In contrast, the professor mentions that the scientists always find some cracks or broken parts on the surface of the fighting weapons such as arrows but there is no evidence to prove the fact that this specific artifact has broken parts and scientists do not report damages on the surface of this carved stone balls. Therefore, they cannot use as weapons.
Moreover, according to the reading, the carved stone balls could use as the standard measurement tools in ancient time because they were uniform in size and weight. Conversely, the lecturer rejects this notion by pointing the fact that the carved stone balls made from various kinds of rocks such as sandstone and grant core; hence, they are not uniform in mass and weight. Furthermore, the professor gives an example to clarify this concept that the mass of carved stone balls is similar to the feast full of different kinds of rock that are not the same in the weight. For this reason, they cannot use the standard tools for measuring foods.
Ultimately, contrary to the theory in the reading suggesting that using the carved stone balls in the ancient time were the symbols of the high ranked social status because of their elaborated forms, the professor asserts that they do not have elaborated and complicated designs; however, they have very simple forms that might not represent the social status of high ranked people. In addition, she adds that there is any evidence to demonstrate that they buried with high ranked people as their possessions in their graves or toms.
