Both the reading and the lecture are about the Steller's sea cow which used to live on the coast of Siberia. The author of the reading provides us with three reasons for the extinction of this creature. While on contrary the lecturer casts doubts on those reasons.
First, the author points out that the Stellers most probably has been extinct due to the overhunting by the Siberian people. The reoccurrence of the hunting over hundreds of years will sure lead to this species to disappear. The lecture challenges this point. He says that due to the Steller's body specifications, it is really unconvincing to consider overhunting is the reason for the extinction. Steller's body is too large that a couple of them are enough to feed a Sibrian village for a month.
second, the author conducts that the disturbance of the sea ecosystem may be another reason for the extinction. As it is mentioned, the disturbance of the ecosystem led to a decrease in the availability of kelp which is the main food source for Stellers. As a consequence, the Stellers population decreased until extinction. The lecturer rebates on this reason. He states the this is not true. If there was an ecosystem disturbance, the whale population will be affected too, but this didn't happen. For sure the Steller extinction was not for the disturbance in the ecosystem.
Finally, the author writes that the third reason for the extinction may be due to the hunting by the fur traders. As the article mentions that the last sea cow was caught by fur trader in 1741. The lecturer totally disagrees with this idea. He says that the stellers are distinct hundred of years before the Europian fur traders access this area. It is not logical at all to consider the Europian traders as a reason.
