TPO 43

The reading passage claims that Agnostids have become extinct many years ago and they were primitive relatives of modern insects. Also, there is limited information about agnostids and hardly can scientists determine how they behave and live. But there are several theories about their ways of life. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.

First, the author embraces the idea that agnostids were active predators or free-swimming predators, which feed on smaller organisms because they were just six millimeters. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the idea that agnostids had tiny eyes and in some case, they were blind. Also, they had no special sense, which a predator should have in order to capture the prey.

The author also asserts that there is a possibility that they lived on the seafloor and survived by feeding on dead organisms. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that other animals species live in seafloor do not have the ability to move quickly and they stay in the localized and small geographic areas. But agnostids moved pretty fast and it is unusual that they were seafloor dwellers.

Finally, as set forth by the author they could be parasites and feeding on larger organisms. Conversely, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that the population of parasites is not very large and they can kill all different organisms. Also, the high population of agnostids refutes this claim.

Having scrutinized all the ideas, a logical conclusion that can be drawn is that there are pieces of evidence having been ignored by the author while the presence of which could strengthen the author's claim.
