The reading passage lists three reasons why some archaeologists think the silver coin is fake while the professor in the lecture disagrees with those.

The first reason the lecturer argues is that the long distance between the Norse presented and the coin discovered could be a great explanation for where was the coin from. It is possible that a native travelled great distance, found the coin and then bought it back to Maine. That is to say, the claim in the reading that the coin was not from the Norse because of the long distance is not convincing.

Secondly, the reading holds the view that there is no other coin has been found, so the Norse did not bring any silver coins with them. The professor, however, mentions that the Norse might bring some silver coins when they came to America and pick them all back to Europe. Since the silver coins were valuable, they would not return home without all coins. Thus, the professor fights against the claim in the reading again.

Finally, the professor represents his idea that although the European silver coins are not recognized by American people, they were not absolutely useless. The Norse knew that native was easily attracted by unusual and special objects, like the beautiful coins, which might be considered as jewellery and traded for other things. This idea is far away from the suggestion in the reading that there was no use for the Norse to bring the coins when they came to America.
