The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is about the discovery of a silver coin in the state of Maine in the United States. Considering this, the author maintains that there are some archaeological reasons which are proven that Norse, European explorer, didn't bring a silver coin to America. The professor,on the other hand, unequivocally challenges whatever contended in the reading by citing three reasons.

First, both the professor and the author talk about the great distance between the first settlement of Norse and the Native American site. As claimed by the passage, Norse settlement was in eastern Canada which had more than a thousand kilometers distance from the native American site in Maine. therefore, It is not probable that some connections were existed between Norse and the native American people. The lecturer, nevertheless, contradicts the author's view and explains that great distance between the locations of Norse and the native American site might not be a rational reason because many other faraway objects were found in the native American site. Besides, the native American people were able to travel long distances to reach the Norse settlement and to bring the silver coin to Maine.

Second of all, both the lecture and the passage discuss numbers of coins. The passage goes on to mention that no other coins were discovered in the Norse settlement so that Norse didn't bring coins into America. In contrast, the lecturer explains that Norse had brought some coins to north America. But they didn't want to live there forever so that they packed all valuable possessions like their coins when they had came back to Europe.

The last point discussed in the passage is the native American people wouldn't view coins as money so that the silver coins were the useless things for them. However, the professor rejects this by declaring that the native American people valued strange and beautiful objects. Also, they could use coins in some jewellery like a necklace. Therefore, Norse were able to trade with silver coins as long as the native American viewed coins beautifully and unusually.
