Both the reading passage and the lecture are about a silver coin belonging to European explorers from eleventh century. Although the reading passage gives three reasons to support the hypothesis that someone put the coin to mislead the public, the lecturer opposes and believes the coin is originally brought to America by the Norse, and the reasons aren't plausible.
First, the author mentions the great distance from eastern Canada where the Norse settled to the Maine site in North America. However, the professor in the lecture points to the fact that native Americans had traveled far places before, and were interested in obtaining stuff from those far sites. And the issue of great distance doesn't work.
In addition, according to the author, as nobody could find even another coin and that silver coin was only one, we come to this issue that the coin is fake. Nevertheless, the claim is correct, the conclusion is not necessarily true. As they weren't permanent settlers and they wanted to return to their home, it seems possible that while packing their valuable stuff they missed one coin.
Finally, we might think bringing coin by the Norse was useless since native Americans didn't accept silver coin as money, in accordance with the reading passage. On the contrary, the lecturer states the value of silver coin in another form of money rather than today's form. The native Americans might have known silver coin as jewelry, as it was beautiful and fascinating. Therefore, the Norse may trade silver coins for other stuff. In conclusion, we come to the result that the reasons given by the reading passage aren't convincing and there's a probability that the coin was brought to the North America by the Norse 1000 years ago.
