TPO 44 writing Integrated
In 1957 a European silver coin dating to the eleventh century was discovered at a Native American archaeological site in the state of Maine in the United States. Many people believed the coin had been originally brought to North America by European explorers known as the Norse, who traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and came into contact with Native Americans almost a thousand years ago.

The reading passage discusses several reasons why the coin found at a Native American archeological site is not authentic and is a historical fake. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons provided by the reading passage.

First, the author claims that since there's a great distance between the Norse settlement and Maine site, the coin did not probably have any connection with the settlement. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that since the natives would travel far away within North America, they might have bought objects about which they were interested. Therefore, since they might have brought silver coins while traveling Norse as well.

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that because no other coins were found at the site, the Norse did not bring silver coins to their settlements. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that even though no other coins were found at the site, this doesn't necessarily mean that they didn't bring silver coins with themselves. Many natives didn't establish permanent settlements and they sometimes would return to Europe. Therefore, they might have brought silver coins to their settlements and after packing up and returning, they would have taken all the coins back. Accordingly, they may have left no coins at their settlement.

Finally, the reading passage asserts that silver coins were useless for native North Americans since they didn't recognize it as money. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that although native people could not use European coins as money, the coins might have actually seemed appealing to some of these people. Moreover, since the coins were beautiful, they could have been used in necklaces or other jewelry. Therefore, these coins could be traded with Europeans for these purposes.
