In this set of materials, the reading passage states that some fossil structure resembled bees nests are discovered from 200 million years ago, but some skeptics say that this fossil not belong to bees and provide 3 reasons. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading points by providing different reasons (and examples).

First, the reading indicates that fossil of bees could not remain from 200 million years ago, and the earliest bees' fossil discovered from 100 million years ago. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that it is true that no fossil remains of actual bees 200 years ago, but it does not mean bees could not exist on that time. Bees could not preserve fossil on that time because fossils have been preserved in the fossilized resin tree. And trees that produced resin were rare. So, the fossil cannot remain from bees.

Furthermore, the reading argues that 200 million years ago, the flowering plant did not exist, so bees did not have food and they could not live; conversely, what the lecturer believes is different. She points out that early bees may feed on the non-flowering plant. They ate non-flowering plants such as ferns and pine tree. When flowering plant grew, bees adapted to eat them.

Finally, according to the reading, fossils are similar to nest chambers made by modern bees, and the fossils do not have spiral caps, so the fossils may be made by other insects. However, the professor believes that chemical evidence shows that chambers were made by bees. Because bee produced some especial chemical component such as waterproof. When fossils were chemically analysis, it shows that they have some kind of waterproof materials that made by bees.
