Both the author and the professor talks about the existence of bees around 200 million years ago. The author states that it is not found any solid evidence to support whether the bees has early evolved as early as 200 million years or not and provide the three reason to disagree a theory. However, the professor says that it is possible to exist bees though not found the special evidence and refutes each of the reason provide by author in the passage.
First, the passage posits that there is no any fossils to support the presence of bees during that period. But, the professor rebuts by saying that it is true that there is no fossil found during the period of 200 million years that does not mean no bees were exist in that time. He mention that, it may be because of trees. Trees were not present and without tree it is not possible to provide the evidence of bees. If trees were present at those time, certain evidence were stick in their sticky liquid of trees. Trees were only present after so long time later.
Second, the author claims that bees only feed the flowering plants and there were no flowering plant at that time period so, we cannot say that bees were present during 200 million years ago. In contrast, the professor explains that before the flowering plant, bees use non flowering plant to feed like ferns, pine etc. After the presence of flowering plant bees start to adapt to use flowering plant for feeding purpose.
Third, the reading mention that there is no any solid proof about the chamber found in that era was made by bees because those types of fossilized structures were made by other insects such as wood boring beetles. However, the professor counters this point by saying that there is a chemical evidence which clearly shows that bees made their chamber in 200 million years ago. The chamber made by bees is water distinct like the same kind of water proof chamber made by modern bees today.
