The reading passage states that in the United States, the patient information traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms but still, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record system which allows them to record patient information in databases rather than on paper. This new method, may have several advantages. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on the points made in the reading.
First, considering the article, electronic records can reduce costs by saving money on storing and transferring medical records since paper records need a significant amount of storage space and additionally, using electronic records can make a easily access to doctors from almost everywhere and can be duplicated or transferred when necessary. In contrast, the professor in the lecture contradicts the idea and further explains that electronic records may not make a significant change because many of the doctors, keep those documents on paper too as a way of backup and they most of them keep associated.
Second, the reading claims that electronic medical records are crucial to reducing the chances of medical errors because illegible handwriting, improper transcription of data and nonstandard organization of papers can cause errors. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture refutes the information presented in the reading and makes the point that even by using electronic records, doctors will still use the paper by hand to check what the doctor has been writing before.
Third, the author in the reading passage puts forward the idea that electronic medical record can greatly aid medical research by making it possible to gather large amounts of data from patient records. On the other hand, the speaker contradicts the idea and adds that because of the privacy problems, it may be hard for the researchers to have access to all this records since they have to get patients permission while some may prefer to keep their information private.
